The complement system is part of the immune response, and has evolved to protect the body from pathogens, and other threats. It is based on multiple circulating proteins that cleave and activate one another, forming activation cascades that lead to bacterial cell killing, either through the membrane attack complex, the MAC, which disrupts the bacterial cell membrane in Gram-negative bacteria, or through phagocytosis, in both Gram-positive and negative bacteria.
